Famous musicians favourite video games!
Hello friends it’s Tim here from Super Mayhem, Awoooo, and boy howdy do I have a video for you today!
We all love music in one form or another. From some 6bit goodness tunes to the latest autotuned hits, music is a big part of our lives whether we are aware of it or not! But what do these musicians do in their down time? Hey, they are people too, they play some sweet sweet video games. But what games and who? And how? And all of those other questions!? Well today we will dive into some of the most popular musicians on earth and what their favourite video games are!
Starting off, we are going to take a look at the artist Drake, who is arguably one of the biggest names in music at the moment! Drake is a fan of the battle royale hit, Fortnite. So much so that he even mentioned it on his Instagram and even Twitter where he famously streamed with the massive Twitch sensation Ninja! After playing for 3 hours with the streamer he ended up turning off his PlayStation and grunted “Huh, my very own lonely lodge”. I’m not quite sure what he meant by that but at least he is a Fortnite fan I guess!
Next up we have Post Malone, who was actually currently touring with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers when I wrote this and I was lucky enough to see, and he revealed to Rolling Stone that he is a big Call of Duty fan! The rapper even said that when the new COD dropped he was on his Xbox until 6am playing the game! I’ll be he gets some mean head shots whilst he is at it too!

Moving on, the artist Grimes apparently did an interview with the magazine Fader where the artist claimed their favourite video game was the sims. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find this exact reference but there is a reddit topic talking about how the artist’s music does sound a lot like the Sims music! Maybe there was some inspiration drawn there by Grimes? Someone ask her if you get the chance! For those tech people out there too, you may also know that Elon Musk actually dated Grimes back in 2018! So that’s something of interest I guess.
It isn’t just newer musicians that like video games either! Paul McCartney of Beatles fame told Edge in an interview that his favourite game was the classic Tetris! Believe it or not this mega star even worked on a Commodore 64 game, well kind of. Paul had made a film called “Give My Regards to Broad Street” back in 1984. Unfortunately the film flopped but it did spur on a C64 game that had the same name and according to a timeextension.com article the game “…tasked players with driving around London to recover a set of missing master tapes. Unlike most licensees, though, who would simply sit back and let the developers do all the work, McCartney took it as an opportunity to get more familiar with the world of video games, meeting regularly with the development team to discuss the game’s music and design.” Pretty cool of the old Beatles Bassist if you ask me!

Another older rocker, Dave Grohl, the Foo Fighters front man, Nirvana Drummer and who has also played in many other bands including Queens of the Stone age, apparently loves his Space Invaders. Grohl said in an interview with Metal Hammer, “I used to play Space Invaders all the time, I loved that game.” This was also confirmed in an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine! His band, The Foo Fighters, have even had song featured in a vast number of video games too, including the 2006 game Guitar Hero 2 which included one of their hits “Monkey Wrench” as a playable song.
Moving along, According to a 2018 article published on highsnobiety, Tyler the creator is a big fan of games like Mario Kart, GTA V, Pro Skater 4, FIFA, NBA 2k, Metal Gear Solid
In one of his quotes, Tyler even speculated that Justin Bieber would probably rather play XBOX than go to some charity event, ending the quote by adding that he is happy he get’s to pick and choose what he wants to do.
Weirdly, in an interview with Spin, the artist claimed he learned how to skate board by using Pro Skater 4 as a guide. Later Tyler, the Creator, even became a playable character in the 5th version of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater! Talk about a full circle!
Adding to the artists gamer cred, Tyler was even actually a random character in the much loved video game GTA V and confirmed this back in 2013. The Rapper is quoted as saying “IF YOU HAVE GTA V IM THE VOICE OF RANDOM PEOPLE SO YEAH,”. It is kind of weird how many musicians end up in odd situations in random video games!

So what are your thoughts on these famous people and their video game tastes? Do games define the musician or does their art speak for themselves? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below! And with all that said I’ll catch you in the next vid my friends, awoooo!
