Ah it’s that spooky time of year again, Halloween. Being in Australia I can only imagine the whimsy and magic in the air over in America at this time. The leaves are changing, the air is becoming crisp and demons and ghouls walk the streets with their jack o lanterns shining. Month of October 2018 celebrates an important milestone for what’s widely been described as one of the greatest Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) game ever – Super Mario Bros. 3.

Initially released in 1985 as the first side-scrolling 2D game featuring the moustached hero, Super Mario Bros. series achieved its widespread glory three years later, starting from 23^rd October when Super Mario Bros. 3 took the stage.

It’s where all the Sonic the Hedgehog fame began. It’s the original 16-bit game developed Sega in 1991. Sonic the Hedgehog is a single player, platform game that was released for Sega Mega Drive/Gen System.

Ask older generations of Mario fans what they used to enjoy about the game and the chances are they will tell you it was the pure excitement of the platform games that made them fall in love with video gaming. Indeed, back when you had two buttons and Mario wasn’t able to do a sequence of rather impressive jumps but instead had to daringly leap towards the edge of cliffs, the games provided all manner of excitement and challenge compared to some of the flashier, graphically intensive games of today.

The sheer mention of the name Mario is often enough to send shivers up the spine of both casual and hardcore gamers. Since the portly Italian broke onto the gaming scene in Donkey Kong back in 1981, Mario has captured the imagination of gamers all around the world and will continue to do so in up upcoming titles such as Super Mario Party and the hotly anticipated Super Smash Bros Ultimate, which is slated for release on the 7th December later this year.
